The Power of Prayer

By Rev. John Tellis

“Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints” Ephesians 6:18

We should never undervalue the power of prayer. The key is to pray in accordance to God’s Holy will. Some people find it uncomfortable to pray in the will of God. When we pray according to God’s will, our prayers are unstoppable. How do we know what God’s will is for us? We should read and obey the Word of God and pray for knowledge and understanding. Jesus states a promise to the children of God, “If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.” John 15:7

We find comfort, hope, peace, and joy by careful study, obedience, and activation of the Scriptures in our daily lives. I am very grateful to be a participant for several years with a group of Intercessors who start their day by praying together Monday-Friday from 6:30 a.m. – 7:00 a.m. via teleconference. Our purpose for corporately praying together is to develop accountability and discipline. We command our mornings to God before we began to interact with the “things” of the day. One truth that we have discovered is that our prayer requests are not always answered with an automatic download. We have not had the pleasure of turning on our electronic devices and pressing a button that gives us an instant message from God.

However, we have experienced through consistent and faithful prayers that the perspectives of our days are more positive and encouraging. We exhort those who may be faced with trials of life or difficult circumstances. We have established a bond and unity through fellowship and praise to God. The context of Jesus’ words that are modeled in Matthew 18:18-19 is church unity. “Truly I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. Again, truly I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything they ask for, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven.” Jesus taught often on the need for love, unity, and forgiveness.

Prayer: Dear God, thank you for the freedom to talk to you on a daily basis both individually and collectively. Thank you for giving us a heart, mind, and spirit that desires to be in your presence. Forgive us for all the times we rushed into fulfilling our big rocks, high priorities, and special projects before commanding our day to you. In Jesus’ mighty name we pray! Amen
