We are deeply saddened and troubled by the recent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. This is a sign of how the relentless use of negative rhetoric sows division in our society and breaks down our politics. As followers of Jesus Christ, we embrace the Biblical imperatives to “love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22: 39) and “blessed are the peacemakers” (Matthew 5:9), and we call on others to do the same. Violence is never the answer.
We pray for President Trump’s continued recovery and for God’s comfort to the loved ones of those killed, injured, and traumatized at the political rally. We also pray for unity in our country as the 2024 presidential election approaches. We pray that candidates for political office at all levels of government, their supporters, and the media will focus on issues and cease the personal attacks and mean-spirited content that has created and fomented a climate of fear. Let’s recommit together to build “a more perfect union” founded on peace, love, respect, and justice.
In Christ,
The Colorado Council of Churches
