World Refugee Day

June 20, 2026

June 20th is World Refugee Day, designated by the United Nations as the day to honor the strength and courage of people who have been forced to flee their home country to escape conflict or persecution.

According to the most recent numbers, more than 1 in every 70 people on Earth has been forced to flee their homes, totaling 117.3 million. 40% of all displaced people are children. Among them are nearly 42.5 million refugees.

Since 1980, more than 80,000 refugees have resettled in Colorado.

Project Worthmore supports refugees, newcomers, and other displaced people by providing essential programs and services to ensure their health, stability, and dignity as they navigate the challenges of starting over and building safe, secure lives in a new community.

About Project Worthmore

Project Worthmore is a locally rooted nonprofit organization, located on East Colfax in Aurora, Colorado, dedicated to walking alongside refugees and immigrants as they rebuild their lives in our community.

What began as small English classes in living rooms has grown into a network of programs that support thousands of newcomers each year. For over 15 years, Project Worthmore has been a trusted presence in the community, now serving an average of 6,500 clients annually. Today, we offer English classes, a dental clinic, a farm and food share program, community navigators, and opportunities for connection through Understanding Neighbors.

At the heart of this work is a commitment to community, dignity, and long-term support. As the needs of newcomer families evolve, Project Worthmore continues to grow and adapt, creating pathways toward stability, self-sufficiency, and a true sense of belonging.
